St Nicholas of Mira, also known as Nicholas of Bari, a Greek-born early Christian bishop of the Roman Empire from the Asian seaside city of Mira, was also known as "Nicholas the Wonderworker" because of the many miracles he performed through his intercession. St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people and students in cities and countries across Europe. His fame spread among the devout, as was common among early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secretly giving gifts gave rise to the traditional pattern of Father Christmas ("St Nick") visits to St Nicholas.
