  • 🏰Background Introduction: Castel del Monte is a 13th-century castle and citadel located on a small hill in the southeastern region of Apulia, Italy, near Andria. It was built by King Frederick II in the 1240s, inheriting the land from his mother Constance of Sicily. In the 18th century, the interior of the castle was stripped of its marble and remaining furnishings. It lacks both moats and drawbridges, leading some to believe it was never designed as a defensive fortress. However, archaeological work suggests it originally had curtain walls. Described by the Italian encyclopedia as "the most fascinating castle built by Frederick II," the site is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also appears on an Italian version of a one-euro coin.
