His employee, Bob Cratchit, asks Scrooge to give him a day off on Christmas Day to spend time with his family, and Scrooge reluctantly agrees. That night, Scrooge returns home and encounters the ghost of his business partner Jacob Marley, who died seven years earlier, bound in heavy chains.
