- 🛰️Background: Luna 22 was the 2rd of two "advanced" lunar orbiters, the first being Luna 19. Intended for extensive scientific investigations from orbit, on its way to the Moon, Luna 20 had to perform a mid-course correction on May 30 and entered lunar orbit on June 2, 1974. When the spacecraft first entered lunar orbit, it had an apogee of 222 km (138 miles), a perigee of 219 km (136 miles), and an inclination of 19°35'. These orbital parameters changed throughout the mission. Luna 22 performed without any issues during various orbital changes and continued returning photographs over 15 months after its main mission had ended, concluding on April 2, 1975. The spacecraft's maneuvering propellant was depleted on September 2, 1975. After a highly successful mission, the mission officially ended in early November 1975.
