Developed in the 1960s as part of several Soviet manned lunar programs (designed for human spaceflight to the Moon), similar to the American LM, LK modules of the T2K variant flew in Earth orbit without a crew but did not reach the Moon. The development of the N1 launch vehicle, required for lunar missions, faced setbacks (including multiple launch failures), while American astronauts achieved the first lunar landing. As a result, both the N1 and LK programs were canceled without any further advancements.
